Why Become a Member?

The Society is the professional organisation for geography education and research in New Zealand.  In addition to advocating for geography through teaching (at high schools and universities), research and in the public domain, the Society affiliates with other professional bodies in New Zealand and overseas.  Members also become part of their local branch and are eligible for consideration for the Society's President's Awards and Distinguished New Zealand Geographer Medal.

Branches of the Society run lecture and seminar series for local members. These feature speakers from New Zealand and abroad. Branches also take turns to host the biennial conferences. Some branches provide grants in aid for student members to attend conferences.

The Society works to promote Geography in schools through a very active New Zealand Board of Geography Teachers. Member schools receive a copy of the "Network", The Board of Geography Teachers' newsletter, each term and schools become eligible for entry to several competitions run by, or in conjunction with, the Society – including Maatangi whenua and the international Science Olympiad.

The Society holds a biennial Geography conference and periodically combines with the Institute of Australian Geographers for joint conferences. Membership of the Society results in lower fees for members at our conferences. The Society provides disciplinary representation to the Royal Society of New Zealand and affiliation with the International Geographical Union.

The Society through Wiley-Blackwell publishes three issues of New Zealand Geographer yearly in April, August and December. This includes a GeoEd section specifically aimed at classroom teachers. Journals published post 2004 can be accessed on line by current members who have subscribed to the journal.
