Women and Gender Geographies Study Group

Aims

The Women & Gender Geographies Study Group of the NZGS exists to support both women geographers and geographical research with a gender focus. The Group has four distinct, but related aims:

·      to strengthen and support the visibility of women geographers and researchers;

·      to strengthen and support the visibility of gender and geography perspectives through our teaching and research;

·      to facilitate opportunities to support our research, teaching and academic career development;

·      to support and advocate for women geographers.

Anyone who shares these aims is very welcome to join the activities of the Group. We welcome postgraduate members, women working in any kind of geographical research, and geographers of any gender with an interest in gender-focused research.

History

The Group was formally launched in October 2016 and is an extension of the, very successful, Women and Gender Geographies Research Network (WGGRN) which has been running since 2013.

Activities

Activities of the Women and Gender Geographies Study Group and WGGRN have included video-conference and in-person meetings, paper and panel sessions at conferences, journal contributions, and advocacy activities. The associated networking has also helped members to develop supportive national networks of colleagues. Common themes in Group meetings and discussions include mentoring, precarious work environments, care work both inside and outside the academy, gendered experiences of academic work, and promoting an ethic of care in the workplace. We have welcomed international guest speakers and visitors to our meetings and are keen to hear from any visiting geographers who may be interested in engaging with the group.

Ambitions

The Women and Gender Geographies Study Group aspires to support women geographers and to strengthen gender and geography perspectives in research and teaching. We have access to a small fund to help support unwaged members, and those with childcare costs, to attend Women and Gender Geographies activities. We are always happy to discuss new ways to work towards our goals.
