NZGS Membership is open to individuals and schools from Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas. There are six membership types. Select the option that best fits you or your school below to begin the registration or membership renewal process.
School Full
The Society works to promote Geography in schools through a very active New Zealand Board of Geography Teachers. Member schools receive a copy of the “Network”, The Board of Geography Teachers' newsletter, each term and schools become eligible for entry to several competitions run by, or in conjunction with, the Society.
Rate: 150 NZD
School Concessionary
This concessionary membership plan is available to schools with fewer than 50 students studying geography in years 11‐13.
Rate: 75 NZD
Fellow
To qualify for election as a Fellow, a member must satisfy the Executive that they:
have been a member of the Society for a least a total of five years;
have made a substantial contribution to the advancement of geographical knowledge or practice either by their own research and / or practice or by organising or developing the work of others;
possess advanced knowledge of geography in any of its fields; and,
provide guidance and leadership for the Society.

Fellow Concessionary
This concessionary membership plan is available to society fellows who are retired or unwaged.
Rate: 75 NZD
Individual
This membership plan is available for employed individuals and those working in academia, research centres, public and private institutions, companies, etc.
Rate: 85 NZD
Individual Concessionary
This concessionary membership plan is available to retired or unwaged individuals and students undertaking study.
Rate: 35 NZD
Benefits of a NZGS Membership
Join NZGS and become part of a vibrant community of geographers! Geographers are at the forefront of education and research and contribute to a significant variety of intellectual and policy debates. The need for geographic knowledge and expertise is essential across a range of issues regionally, nationally and internationally. It is an exciting, and necessary, time to be a geographer.
NZGS is a network that extends across schools, universities, research institutes and public and private sector organisations within and beyond Aotearoa New Zealand.
Members receive news on geographical research and educational resources, and enjoy access to a range of opportunities for networking, professional development and scholarly exchange including discounted registration rates at our biennial conferences. Members are eligible for our awards and scholarships scheme that recognises and supports geographers at all career stages.
Your annual subscription enables the Society to advocate for geographers and geography, by:
engaging with the Royal Society of New Zealand who supports our work with the International Geographical Union, including its research groups, and the International Geography Olympiad;
working with the Board of Geography Teachers who support the development of secondary school geography and who run the annual Maatangi Whenua Year 11 inter-school geography competition;
promoting the position of geography in universities and schools;
and, supporting high school, undergraduate and postgraduate students, who are the next generation of geographers.
The membership period is 1 January to 31 December. Members will receive an automated notice when their membership is about to expire.

Gender and Geography Aotearoa (GAGA)
Gender And Geography Aotearoa (GAGA) is a network of geographers and other critical scholars and activists whose research interests include feminism, gender, sexuality, space and place. GAGA's aims are to:
- strengthen the visibility of women and gender diverse geographers, researchers and activists working on gender, sexuality and feminist research in Aotearoa;
- enhance gender, sexuality, feminist and other critical perspectives throughout our teaching and research;
- facilitate opportunities to support each other, our research, teaching and academic career development.

Mobilities
The Mobilities in Geography Study Group (MGSG) is a network of researchers that seek to understand the interconnectedness and complexities of socio-economic systems as they are transformed by being on the move. The MGSG is linked to the Mobilities Network for Aotearoa New Zealand.
